my husband and I have had our maltese x schitzu for about 2 years now and over the past 10 months she started getting very itchy and red, he fur fell out and all around her eyes turned black. we took her to the vet after trying various shampoos and creams and environment changed only to find out she is allergic to over 35 different things, including grasses, polans, dusts etc. We are currently have her on antihistamines that the vet plans to reduce over the next 6 months and they work great, however last night my husband forgot to give her just 1 tablet and she flaired right back up again. she is in agony until the tablets kick in and smells really bad because of all her dead skin.
I am worried that she will start up again when we stop the antihistamines and the vet said that desensitization would kill her because there are so many allergies, we cant get rid of dust and grass and the other things she is allergic to and if we find a new home for her she will end up with the same problems.
She is also on a special diet because she is allergic to food.
what else can we do to help her?

It could be a disrupted immune system. You could try giving your dog some probiotic supplements. You can get a product called Culturelle at most stores. It’s a capsule you can empty onto her food. Sometimes the just need their digestive system rebalanced to help out. Dogs are carnivore scavengers, but a lot of dog foods are full of grains and crap most dogs would never eat in real life. Plus, people tend to feed dogs all kinds of crap, like ice cream, sugar candies, fatty treats, etc. Over time this can throw the balance of the dog’s digestive tract out of whack. You might also get some inexpensive broccolli or other cheap ruffage green veggie to add to her food and see if she’ll eat it. Green veggies are mother nature’s broom, and help sweep things out.
We had a dog that had something like this, but it turned out it was some kind of mites. It got very bad, all her hair fell out, and she was very sick for a long time. We gave her green veggies and sardines, which helped immensely as food, but it was costly to keep up that kind of diet. Found a vet that specialized in this kind of treatment, and he gave her this stuff to help kill the mites. Unfortunately, it caused her to go deaf. The treatments were expensive, and couldn’t afford them after a while, because we didn’t see enough progress to warrant such. She ended up going blind shortly there-after. She was an older dog, so we eventually just euthanized her instead of seeing her suffer. I really miss her. She was the coolest dog in the world, and I loved her. But sometimes it gets to be a bit much tackling something so severe. You feel helpless, and the vets and things seem to not know what’s going on.
